Arshile Gorky was a survivor of the Armenian Genocide, having been born and raised around the Armenian Van Lake in the Armenian Highlands. His mother died in Yerevan after escaping the mass killings of Armenians in the Armenian provinces of the Ottoman Empire. Many of the historic Armenian elements of Lake Van, including churches, villages, and Armenian cemetaries of Lake Van have been destroyed by the Republic of Turkey.
